This artist is a beginner hoping to get some tips on how to etch well and learn how to follow complex patterns. Any advice?

I can't help on the etching, sorry, but I want to at least say something here!
It's a really nice start for a beginner!!! I had to flip back and forth between the color reference and the horse to spot any points where I could even offer a suggestion.
The artist is leaving longer hairs along the front of the neck. The reference shows rounded freckles rather than roany hairs. Both are correct, it's just a matter of deciding now and staying consistent throughout the horse.
Keep up the good work and more power to you for taking on such a tough pattern as a start. You're doing a good job with it though!
I've only etched once or twice, so I can't help much there, but this is a really nice start! Agreed with the previous comment that the reference picture has more of a freckle effect going instead of roaning, but like they said, either is correct! :) The only other thing I can see is that on the shoulder, you have roaning in the little muscle divots, which I've never seen on an appaloosa- roaning tends to occur on the "bone-ier" raised areas if a horse and/or in the armpit areas, lower flank areas, and around the throat latch. Excellent work so far for a first attempt though, glad to see someone so concerned about the pattern and checking back with a good reference pic :D
